   Wilmington

Area Codes: Unless otherwise noted, the area code for all phone numbers in this guide is 910.

Wilmington's media scene has expanded moderately in the past few years with several new, successful entries in a very competitive market. It has also been remarkably stable in terms of long-term staying power for many of its newspapers, magazines and radio and television stations.

In the print medium, visitors to Wilmington, North Carolina will notice an abundance of tourist-oriented publications in street racks. While these aren't listed here, they're generally handy guides to the area's attractions. Some of them have been around for years, and others seem to drift in one day and out the next. Some of the newer ones aren't mentioned here because their staying power has not yet been demonstrated and, frankly, the research efforts and accuracy of some of the new arrivals are not the best. There's a robust business in publications on real estate, and these magazines or booklets, overwhelmingly reliable, can be found in racks on corners throughout the Cape Fear region.

Choices for radio listening are eclectic, ranging across talk, country music, beach music, urban contemporary, Top 40 and the diverse offerings of the city's own National Public Radio affiliate. Consensus is there could be more successful formats added to those successful stations already on the air, but surely time will change this situation to satisfy everyone.

Television is a somewhat limited medium unless one has cable or satellite services, in which case the whole spectrum of channels becomes available. Fox replaced CBS several years ago and, at this writing, it's difficult to get a clear picture of CBS transmission without cable. Public Television, broadcast from Jacksonville by way of Chapel Hill, has a strong signal.

Whether you are relocating of just visiting Wilmington, North Carolina, a wide variety of media is available to help you keep abreast of local and world.
